As I have with many of its predecessors, I assumed this “diet” was nothing more than slick marketing and exaggerated claims. How could following the Paleo diet actually alter my mind and body into the realm of genuine health and wellness? For years, I ignored the claims from friends, family and media outlets that switching to the Paleo lifestyle was actually making a positive difference.

That is until I noticed my health, energy and mood was declining at a rapid pace. With hesitation, I began researching the Paleo diet. I was shocked by my discoveries, and even more shocked after my body began to heal and alter once I started this transformative lifestyle plan. Even though the Paleo group failed to fully stick to the guidelines, at six months this group lost 14.3 pounds while the low-fat group lost 5.7 pounds. At the halfway mark (12 months), the Paleo group lost an average of 19 pounds, compared to only 9.7 pounds by the low-fat group. Although both groups regained weight by the 24-month mark, the Paleo group maintained a 10.1 pound loss while the low-fat group maintained a 6.4 pound loss.
